Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
